Description
In 1845, the barque ‘Cataraqui’, an emigrant ship out of Liverpool and bound for Melbourne, foundered on this shore, now the resting place of some 400 souls – and this wildly beautiful space is their memorial – the pounding waves a constant oratorio from the depths of ocean.
My heart sings as I push open the farm-gate, and breathe in the wind rippling across grassed pastures through which the farm track winds its way down toward that line of deep cobalt on the horizon.
At the ridge of silver cushion bushes the track turns a corner, before the sudden dip to shore reveals a succession of rock stratas, ochre tipped but anchored by the darker wash of seawater and weed.
Near pools are still, in part reflecting sky - with heaps of kelp high and dried to umber, lifeless against the white and soft grey of rounded stone, tumbled by countless tides.
