Description
In western Bass Strait, at longitude 144E and with the 40th parallel of latitude virtually bisecting it – KING ISLAND is first landfall for the Roaring Forties – often blustery, boisterous and squally – and surprisingly beautiful!
On the southeastern coast of the island I explore a small road which winds down to the unexpected and enchanting City of Melbourne Bay. The attractive farm and its outbuildings are set back in the folds of dune behind the beach and a separate gate leads to the site of the 1852 stranding of the schooner after which the bay is named. I decide to paint from high on a grassy hill overlooking the terrain, with a giant sky - and prime Angus to view too.
The morning has clouded over – but in the changing light of clearing skies the sea looks benign in shades of aqua-grey, with just two bands of light. Near to the shoreline the swell is still enough to send up plumes of spray as it reaches the rocks.
The wind is cool; drops of rain – seedheads swaying in the breeze – and then, the quiet serenity of it all is illuminated by a sudden burst of sunshine.
